National Paperclip Day is celebrated on May 29 to honor the humble yet indispensable paperclip. History Behind the Day

The first patent for a paperclip was awarded to Samuel B. Fay in 1867 in the United States. His design was intended to attach tickets to fabric. However, the design we recognize today, known as the "Gem" paperclip, was introduced in Britain in the early 1870s by The Gem Manufacturing Company and was never patented. Despite this, it became the most common type of wire paperclip and is still in use today. During World War II, the paperclip became a symbol of resistance in Norway. People wore paperclips on their clothing to silently protest against the Nazi occupation. The Nazis eventually banned the wearing of paperclips, but the symbol endured. In 1998, students at Whitwell Middle School in Tennessee began collecting paperclips to represent the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, leading to the creation of the "Paper Clips Project."
